British Gas Great North Swim 2010 postponed

Unfortunately it has been necessary to postpone the British Gas Great North Swim, which was due to be staged on 4 & 5 at Windermere.

Update from Great North Swim team at 6pm on Thursday 2 September 2010:

"This is due to prevalence of blue-green algae and the impact that this may have on your safety in the water.

"This decision was taken by the Event Safety Group in the interests of safety of swimmers after further stringent water quality checks were completed.

Seminar to advise on energy efficiency for pools

The ASA, in association with British Gas, Myrtha Pools and Daktronics, will be hosting a ‘Pools for the Future’ seminar on Wednesday 8th July 2009 at Manchester University. The seminar will focus on sustainability and the energy efficiency of swimming pools and is designed to assist all who may be involved in developing or advising upon swimming issues and pools.

The ASA believes that pools should be sustainable and responsive to environmental issues. The seminar will see the launch of the British Gas Business’ Energy360 programme, one of the key initiatives to be developed as part of British Gas’s Principal Partnership with British Swimming. The Energy360 programme is designed to provide comprehensive support and advice to facility owners and operators on energy efficiency and carbon reduction and in doing so help to drive down their costs.

The educational seminar will include high calibre speakers with expertise in their fields, and may qualify as a Continuing Professional Development credit.

The morning session will discuss the launch of the ASA National Facility Strategy and Energy Efficiency, and examine the application of Heat Pumps, Solar Panels, Combined Heat & Power and Water Recycling in Swimming pools.

Following a break for lunch (included), the afternoon session will focus on the application of the Carbon Footprint to steel shell and conventional concrete swimming pools as well as examining the optimum design of swimming pools for the community.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to watch the British Gas Women’s Water Polo Team in action in the LEN Women’s Water Polo European Nations Trophy taking place at the Manchester Aquatics Centre.
