British Gas Great North Swim 2010 postponed

Unfortunately it has been necessary to postpone the British Gas Great North Swim, which was due to be staged on 4 & 5 at Windermere.

Update from Great North Swim team at 6pm on Thursday 2 September 2010:

"This is due to prevalence of blue-green algae and the impact that this may have on your safety in the water.

"This decision was taken by the Event Safety Group in the interests of safety of swimmers after further stringent water quality checks were completed.

Report to MPs unveiled at National Conference

Delegates at next month’s inaugural Everyday Swim Conference in London will be the first in the country to view an interim report for Parliament.

The report, which will be presented to MPs at a special reception at the House of Commons in November to be hosted by Andy Reed MP, highlights some of the key learning from Everyday Swim and will be shared with all delegates at the conference.

Launched in July 2006 by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), Everyday Swim is a pioneering project which challenges current swimming provision and aims to produce best practice guidance based on robust monitoring and evaluation and real-life case studies.

Underway in eight areas across the country, Everyday Swim aims to break down the barriers to swimming to get more people into the pool for fun, fitness and as a part of a healthy lifestyle.

Thanks to a £3million investment from Sport England and substantial contributions at a local level, Everyday Swim is one of the country’s largest investigations into increasing activity levels.

Each project has a different focus and many are already bringing about real improvements in the way swimming is delivered and how it is viewed by the local community. Some projects are aimed at specific groups from young people and BME communities to non-swimming adults, disadvantaged families and disabled people, while other focuses include bringing the gym culture to the pool or opening up access to school and private pools to increase capacity.

The Everyday Swim Conference 2007 is a must for anyone involved in swimming provision, health promotion or increasing activity levels amongst local groups and communities.

Speakers at the Everyday Swim Conference include Sport England Chairman Derek Mapp, Everyday Swim Ambassador and Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew MBE, ASA Chief Executive David Sparkes and Director of Sheffield Hallam University’s Sport Industry Research Centre (SIRC) Simon Shibli.

Paralympic swimming champion Chris Holmes MBE will chair the conference, which also includes a variety of interesting workshops during the afternoon session.

The conference takes place on Thursday 11 October at The Barbican in Central London. The day delegate rate is £145 per person and includes lunch and refreshments during the day, a resource pack including the preview of the interim report and online access to resources following the event.

A limited number of spaces are reserved for ASA Official Partners, ASA members, IoS members and colleagues from the voluntary sector at the reduced price of £130 per person.
