Aiming High in Dorset - Feb / Mar 2010 Sport and Physical Activity Programme for children of Special Needs

The Government has provided funding for respite care for parents and carers of disabled children and Dorset County Council has teamed up with partners to create an exciting programme of events to create regular breaks . Disabled children will be able to take part in football, gymnastics, trampolining, multi-sports and swimming at various venues across the county, many of which are free of charge.

Session instructors and coaches will try to adapt the activities as far as possible to make them accessible to all comers.

Pupils take action to save Blandford Leisure Centre

Children and adults supported the threatened Blandford Leisure Centre as they took part in a non-uniform day prior to half term. Schools across the Blandford network and staff at North Dorset District Council's offices were encouraged to come in wearing trainers and sports gear to raise the profile of the centre and the funds needed to save it from the threat of closure.

People taking part were asked to make a donation to the Save the Leisure Centre Fund managed by the Blandford Leisure Centre Action Group.

Pupils were not be asked to make a donation, but Sally Wilson, headteacher at the Blandford School, said: "The schools' network, which includes ourselves and eight primary schools in the area, is extremely concerned at the threat of closure. Our students want to ensure their voices are heard. Where will young people be able to access swimming and leisure facilities if the centre closes? We ask parents and members of the public in Blandford and our very rural catchment areas to make their views known and vigorously support the leisure centre action group."

The leisure centre will lose its £250,000 subsidy from North Dorset District Council in March 2010, and strenuous efforts are being made to find an alternative way of running the centre.

Should it eventually have to close, the money collected will be used for recreation and sports projects in the area, or to help relocate users and clubs to other centres.
