FINA 2009 World Championships Swimming - Day 6 Morning Session
The British Gas Swimming team lowered two British record after putting in a strong performance in the heats on day six of the swimming programme at the FINA World Championships.
The men’s 4x200m Freestyle relay team swam just outside of the British record as they secured qualification to the evening final. The British Gas team, which featured Robbie Renwick, Andrew Hunter, David Davies and David Carry, put in an impressive performance as they finished second in their heat with a time of 7:06.11.
Renwick swam the fastest leg for the team and set a new British 200m Freestyle record time of 1:46.11 as he put the team in an excellent position as Hunter took over the race. The rest of the race saw Hunter, Davies and Carry put in strong performances as they ensured their place in the final.
Michael Rock sealed his place in the semi-finals of the men’s 100m Butterfly as he lowered his own British record after touching home in a time of 51.65. He qualified in 14th place for the semi-final.
Ian Hulme, who is competing at his first World Championships, finished in 38th place overall after touching in a time of 52.55.
Double Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington and World silver medallist Jo Jackson secured their places in the final of the women’s 800m Freestyle after securing the two fastest times from the heats. Jackson was drawn into heat three and she dominated the race as she took the lead from the start and looked strong as she finished in a time of 8:20.80. World record holder Adlington put in a good performance through the final heat as she secured the fastest time overall after touching in 8:20.53. The British Gas swimmers will face competition from Italy’s Olympic silver medallist Alessia Filippi and Romania’s Camelia Potec in the final.
World Champion Gemma Spofforth and Elizabeth Simmonds progressed to the semi-finals of the women’s 200m Backstroke after promising performances. World 100m Backstroke record holder Spofforth won her heat in a time just outside of her British record and she goes into the semi-finals ranked as the second fastest athlete after finishing in a time of 2:07.69. Simmonds put in a good performance and finished in 5th place in her heat with a time of 2:10.31 and goes into the semi-final in 12th place.
Jemma Lowe and Ellen Gandy missed out on the semi-final of the women’s 50m Butterfly. Lowe swam just 0.03 seconds off her personal best but was ranked in 26th place overall with a time of 26.71. Gandy touched in a time of 27.28 and missed the semi-final after being ranked in 38th place overall.
In an event that saw the Championship record broken, Simon Burnett and Adam Brown didn’t progress to the 50m Freestyle semi-finals. Burnett finished in 22nd place overall after finishing in a time of 22.23 and Brown took 40th with a time of 22.64.
