Regional Briefing Jun 09
Alison Usher, ASA South West Regional Director, has started her maternity leave and plans to return on Monday 5 October 2009. From 1 June 2009, Jane Hushon, will be providing 16 hours per week cover for the Regional Director role, looking after the specific work areas of;
- County Swimming Co-ordinators
- CSP liaison and agreements
- Project work (Plymouth, Bristol and BANES)

The ASA Restructure Update
Download an update on the ASA restructure, confirming a number of the new ASA County Swimming Co-ordinators (CSCs) and Senior County Swimming Co-ordinators (SCSCs).
The CSCs will be your first point of contact for any of the ASA services or products, including education, club development and assistance to pool providers and will be working with all of the ASA's partners in their county. Senior CSCs and will be responsible for managing and mentoring a team of CSCs, as well as acting as a CSC within their designated area. They will therefore be involved with promoting the Government’s Free Swimming initiative, with initial emphasis on the over 60 age range; ensure the delivery of agreed KPIs. The role will also involve creating successful partnerships, e.g. with local authorities, to secure the desired culture change required in and around swimming, to encourage people to swim and swim more frequently.
Coaching System Officers have been appointed to co-ordinate (at a regional and sub regional level) the planning, delivery and quality assurance of Swimming’s UK coaching system and will also have a national lead in one area of the system.

Change of role for Kelly Gaffney
With the asa currently restructuring, Kelly Gaffney will be taking a new role as 'Coaching systems Officer' for the South West and South East Regions from 1 April 2009. It will be a strategic role in coach education in the planning, delivery and quality assurance of the UK Coaching System. Kelly will still be based from the South West Office in Gloucester and contactable via the same email and telephone details.
Commenting on her new role, Kelly announced to contacts: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all for their support, efforts and commitment during my role as RDO and the contribution to and value of my major projects of swim21 and young volunteers. It has been a pleasure working with you and I have no doubt that I will be working with you again along the way in my new role.
the asa restructure and development
On Friday 6 February 2009, the asa board approved plans, which will come into effect on 1 March 2009, to change the way the asa delivers its services to its clubs and partners throughout England. More information is available in the letter from David Sparkes for download.
It is important for the asa to continue to assess and review its operations and listen to its members, partners and customers in order to ensure best practice at all times. The Regional Management Board are assessing our current commitments and working through the logistics and operational demands of this change to our structure. We propose to have further information available to you by the second week in March on how we intend moving forwards . Alison Usher appreciates that there are lots of questions and queries, which she will endeavour to answer, but please bear with us during this difficult transition period.
For now you should continue to work with our regions as you have been doing and we will circulate details at a later stage on how Clubs and Counties will work with the 49 county swimming co-ordinators.
