FINA 2007 World Championships

Libby Lenton won the women's 50m freestyle final on Sunday to capture a record-equaling fifth gold medal at the world championships. The 22-year-old Australian powered to victory in 24.53 seconds, successfully defending the title she won in Montreal two years ago and joining American Tracey Caulkins (1978) as the only women to win five gold medals in a single world championship

Jessica Hardy of the United States won the women's 50m breaststroke final. Hardy held off the fast-finishing Leisel Jones to win the gold in 30.63 seconds after winning the silver medal in Montreal two years ago. Tara Kirk of the U.S. was third in 31.05 after taking silver behind Jones in the 100 and medley relay.

Gerhard Zandberg won the men's 50m backstroke final to provide South Africa with their second gold medal at the world championships. Zandberg stormed to victory in 24.98 seconds, giving South Africa their second win after Roland Schoeman won the men's 50 butterfly.

Michael Phelps of the United States broke his own world record in the final of the men's 400m individual medley at the world championships on Sunday.

Phelps, 21, won the gold in 4:06.22 seconds to wipe 2.04 seconds off the previous mark of 4:08.26 which he set at the 2004 Athens Olympics

American teenager Katie Hoff broke the world record to win the women's 400-meter individual medley. Hoff, 17, stormed home over the concluding freestyle leg to touch the wall after 4:32.89 seconds, shaving 0.7 seconds off the previous mark of 4:33.59 set by Ukraine's Yana Klochkova at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Ben Wildman-Tobriner led an American 1-2 in the final of the men's 50m freestyle sprint at the world championships on Saturday. The 22-year-old Californian sliced a quarter of a second off his personal-best time to reach the wall first in 21.88 seconds.

American teenager Kate Ziegler beat Laure Manaudou of France in a last-lap sprint to win the women's 800m freestyle final. The 18-year-old trailed Manaudou when the pair turned for home for the last lap but surged past in the last couple of strokes to win the gold in 8:18.52 seconds

Australia broke the world record to win the women's 4x100m medley relay final at the world swimming championships on Saturday.

The Australian combination of Emily Seebohm, Leisel Jones, Jessicah Schipper and Libby Lenton won the gold in 3:55.74 seconds to slice 0.56 off the previous record of 3:56.30, which Australia set at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne

Michael Phelps won a record-equaling sixth gold medal at the world championships with a dramatic victory in the 100m butterfly final on Saturday.

Phelps beat his American teammate Ian Crocker in a frantic finish in a time of 50.77 seconds, the third-fastest in history and just 0.37 outside Crocker's world record of 50.40

Ryan Lochte of the United States broke the world record to win the 200m backstroke final at the world swimming championships on Friday. Lochte powered his way through the Susie O'Neill pool in a time of 1:54.32 seconds to slice 0.12 seconds off the previous record of 1:54.44 set by his fellow American Aaron Peirsol last year.

Peirsol came second in 1:54.80 after the pair burst clear of the field to fight out the finish. Austria's Markus Rogan took the bronze medal in 1:56.02
