British Gas Great North Swim 2010 postponed

Unfortunately it has been necessary to postpone the British Gas Great North Swim, which was due to be staged on 4 & 5 at Windermere.

Update from Great North Swim team at 6pm on Thursday 2 September 2010:

"This is due to prevalence of blue-green algae and the impact that this may have on your safety in the water.

"This decision was taken by the Event Safety Group in the interests of safety of swimmers after further stringent water quality checks were completed.

Young Aquatics Volunteers programme for 2010/2011

ASA South West Region and south west County ASAs have been awarded ASA funding for the Young Aquatics Volunteers programme for 2010/2011

Your club can be involved in the initiative which forms a partnership between the ASA South West, your County Association and your club.

The young volunteers programme involves young volunteers aged between 15 and19 years of age (volunteers can be 14 but must be 15 years of age by the end of March 2011) from clubs, being invited to assist with activities within a swim21 club environment and gain an insight in to the role and structure and management of a voluntary sports club.

ASA South West and your County will require the young volunteers to complete a minimum of 25 hours voluntary service within a swim 21 club, which can include a variety of different tasks over different areas.

The objective is to increase voluntary involvement within swimming clubs through a proactive working relationship. The young volunteers will also be offered a series of training courses with additional development opportunities such as volunteering at local competitions and County Championships.

Please note this opportunity is offered to volunteers from all aquatic disciplines.

IOS holds price increase on UKCC courses until 1 August 2010

Those considering studying for an ASA teaching or coaching qualification should act now to benefit from the current pricing structure, which will be held until 1 August 2010.

For the past three years, the Institute of Swimming (IoS) - as the premier provider of the ASA’s UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) courses - has continually absorbed increases in the costs of delivering training, rather than pass them on to its valued customers. However, following a review it has become evident that in order to continue to provide courses of the highest quality, it is necessary to increase prices.

Therefore from 1 August 2010 the recommended retail price of Level 1 courses, currently £370, will increase to £395; Level 2 will go up from £650 to £680 and Level 3 course costs will increase by £100 to £1,900.

All candidates booking onto UKCC courses before 1st August 2010 will pay the current prices, regardless of when the course is due to start.
