The strategy supports the Vision for Swimming based on British Swimming and the three home countries fundamental priority of ensuring swimming is accessible to all, regardless of age, gender, creed, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, economic position, disability and level of ability.

Cancellation of Free Swimming Programme and 2009/10 Annual Report

Savings of around £73 million have been made as part of DCMS's contribution to reducing the fiscal deficit.

"We are facing an unprecedented financial situation in this country, and it is essential that we act now to reduce the country’s debt," said Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport.

"We have examined a number of schemes to determine whether they remain a Government priority, value for money, and affordable in the current economic climate. This has involved some incredibly difficult decisions, but the cultural and sporting worlds, like everyone else, urgently need the country’s finances to be returned to a sustainable position."

DCMS has published new research which shows that this scheme has not delivered value for money, so funding will end this summer.

OnePlace

Are you interested in knowing how well your local services are tackling the big local issues? There's now a government website called 'Oneplace' where you can find out.

Oneplace – at www.direct.gov.uk/oneplace – is a website set up by the Audit Commission to tell the public how well your local services are working to improve the issues affecting your community. It judges how well the council, police, health organisations and housing bodies are improving areas or issues that are important to residents. This might include cutting crime, improving housing, helping people improve their health, or supporting people and businesses through the recession.

Have your say on draft Plymouth Aquatics Strategy

ASA South West have been working closely with Plymouth City Council on the development of the exciting Life Centre project, which will provide an excellent aquatics facility for our region.

With planning permission agreed, and confirmation of funding from partners including Sport England, The University of Plymouth, and Plymouth City Council, the Plymouth Life Centre is due to open in the autumn of 2011. As part of this work we are looking at the whole of aquatics provision and development within the City.

A draft of this strategy is now available for public consultation on the Plymouth City Council website along with contacts to enable you to give feedback.
