British Gas ASA National Age Groups Diving Championships 2011

8 to 10 July 2011 - Ponds Forge

The British Gas ASA National Age Groups Diving Championships enjoyed record numbers. There were a massive 492 entries over the 28 springboard, platform and synchronised diving events with 177 competitors ranging from 8 to 18-years old.

A number of stand-out performances lit up the competition in Sheffield with Crystal Palace’s Georgia Ward the star of the girls’ events.

Day 1

Jessica Williams and Sam Thornton secured the first medals for the Brits.

In the prelims of the 1m Springboard, Thornton finished in fourth place just behind British Gas GBR Diving Team mate Daniel Goodfellow. Thronton had a consistent final as he won bronze with a score of 359.55. Goodfellow finished in fifth with 350.10.

Williams, who was competing in the 10m Platform, put in an excellent performance in the final to win her bronze with a score of 371.55. She impressed with her consistency throughout the prelim and final. Robyn Byrch finished in fifth with a score of 354.85.

British Gas National Diving Championships 2011 - Day 3

Southampton’s Peter Waterfield won the gold medal in the 10m Platform after securing three tens on one of the hardest dives in the world on the final day of competition at the British Gas National Diving Championships

The event saw World Champion Tom Daley and Olympic medallist Peter Waterfield going head to head for honours but it was Daley that got the edge in the prelim. Waterfield missed his leg grip on his Front 4 ½ Somersaults tucked and Daley remained consistent to win the prelim.

In the final, Waterfield took the lead after the first round but he dropped his Inward 3 ½ Somersaults to give Daley the lead. The Plymouth diver dropped his Front 4 ½ Somersaults tucked which allowed Waterfield to move into a thirty point lead.

British Gas National Diving Championships 2011 - Day 2

The women’s 10m Platform saw the return of Monique Gladding after her injury in Russia and Tonia Couch after her recent knee injury.

Couch put in a commanding performance throughout the final and held her nerve after dropping a dive to finish with a flourish. The Plymouth diver scored nines on her Reverse 2 ½ Somersaults tucked to finish with the gold medal after scoring a total of 321.65. Her club-mate Brooke Graddon scored 305.35 to win silver and City of Leeds’ Sarah Barrow won the bronze with 303.35 points.

Gladding impressed with her steady performance and took fifth place with a score of 295.50.

British Gas National Diving Championships 2011 - Day 1

The women’s 10m Synchro proved to one of the closest finals on day one of the British Gas National Diving Championships with two pairs within touching distance of each other. Due to recent injuries two new pairs were formed for this competition. Sarah Barrow (City of Leeds) and Tonia Couch (Plymouth) finished the required rounds with a score of 105.60 while the City of Leeds pair of Rebecca Gallantree and Jenny Cowen had 100.20 points.

Gallantree and Cowen went into the lead in the opening round of the optional dives after scoring 72.00 points on their Front 3 ½ Somersaults piked.

It went down to the final round. Barrow and Couch scored 80.64 on their Back 2 ½ Somersaults 1 ½ Twists piked to win the gold with a score of 317.22.

AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix 2011, Fort Lauderdale

5 to 8 May 2011 - Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex

Rebecca Gallantree and Alicia Blagg stormed to silver at the FINA Grand Prix event with a strong performance in the 3m Synchro.

The Brits put themselves in a good position after good required dives and they then scored highest on their opening optional dive - the Back 2 ½ Somersaults piked.

Dresden Junior International 2011 - Diving

The British Diving Team, powered by British Gas, won three medals and put in some promising performances along the way.

The first medal came from Jessica Williams and Robyn Birch who won the bronze in the 3m Synchro. The new pair started with strong required dives but missed their second optional dive. They bounced back with their Reverse 2 ½ Somersaults tucked to take their bronze medal.

2011 Canada Cup Fina Diving Grand Prix - Round up

Jenny Cowen impressed on the last day of competition at the FINA Grand Prix in Montreal with a strong performance in the women’s 10m Platform final. Cowen secured her highest international score of 317.45 in the semi-final and qualified for the final after finishing third.

The City of Leeds diver performed consistently throughout the final and scored 8s on her first four dives. She dropped marks on her Back 2 ½ Somersaults piked but this didn’t stop her from securing her highest international score.

Cowen finished with a total of 341.00 and took fifth place. Her score put her just one point behind European champion Noemi Batki in the final.
