Beating cancer

When brave Lucy Page was told she had beaten the cancer that had kept her in and out of hospital for most of this year, the first thing the seven-year-old wanted to do was to go swimming again.

The second thing she and her family wanted to do was to raise some money for the ward in Southampton General Hospital, where Lucy had received treatment for the tumour in her head and where she has spent a lot of her young life.

Get involved in the South West Free Swimming Initiative

Sport England South West, the Amateur Swimming Association South West and the Chief Leisure Officers Association in the South West are piloting a free swimming weekend across the region's 51 local authorities.

The South West Free Swimming Initiative will offer everyone living in the region the opportunity to swim in a public pool without charge over one weekend during October. The focus of the initiative will be 14-16 October 2005.

Take up the Season of Sport challenge

Dorset County ASA is ensuring swimming plays its part in the campaign to encourage healthy, active workplaces with a new initiative in Bournemouth. Companies are being urged to take part in an exciting and fun range of sporting events taking place across Bournemouth throughout the autumn and winter months. The events include a swimming gala and personal distance challenges.

Team members will be asked to raise sponsorship for particpation in events, with the money raised benefitting the Jigsaw Appeal, an organisation aiming to provide Royal Bournemouth Hospital with additional life-saving scanners.
