Dave McNulty appointed Head Coach of Bath Intensive Training Centre

Olympic medal-winning coach Dave McNulty has been announced as the Head Coach of the soon to be established British Swimming Intensive Training Centre (ITC) at the University of Bath. McNulty, who coached Jo Jackson to a bronze medal in the 400m Freestyle at the Beijing Olympics, will head up one of a new nationwide network of five ITCs designed to provide a world-class daily training environment for swimmer development and to build on the success of Beijing as the sport looks towards London in 2012.

The former Durham Aquatics coach, who has spent the past six months at Loughborough University, is looking forward to the challenge.

"I'm very excited about this British Swimming opportunity to work as head coach of the Bath ITC," said McNulty."This ITC will provide all of the daily training requirements for high performance athletes in a world class environment. It will help to build on the success of the Beijing Olympics by looking forward to 2012 and beyond. I take up this position in October and I'm looking forward to working with everyone at TeamBath. By working together with TeamBath we will have a system in place that underpins the ITC and offers opportunities for all."

British Water Polo Team welcomes new Prgramme Manager

British Water Polo has unveiled Joanna Wray as the new Programme Manager.

Joanna previously worked at Sport Taekwondo in Manchester helping to establish a full time elite academy. The academy has gone from strength to strength, developing from the attendance of part time athletes to a fully functioning academy with 16 athletes and a large support team. The team has also travelled to the European Championships, World Championships and the Olympics.

Joanna’s in-depth knowledge of sport, gained from working with athletes both from taekwondo and during her time as a sport psychology consultant, puts her in a great position to be the new programme manager.

The British team would like to extend a very big welcome to Joanna, who will be based in Manchester, working with both the team and coaches.

ASA SW Regional Training Centre Trials and Development Clinic for Water Polo

RTC Trial

As the Development clinic is after the start of the new term, the RTC trials will have to be held on the first session of the new term which will be Friday 3 October 2008. The trials will be split with one in Exeter and one in Gloucester. Trials are for children in the 93/94 age group and the 95/96 age group.

Due to time and pool size, we will be unable to have younger siblings at the trial (as we have done at Millfield). The cost of the session will be £5 but if you are successful, the payment for the remaining 9 sessions will be £50 rather than £55. If you are successful, you will be expected to attend at least 8 out of the 10 possible sessions. If you are not successful at the trial, your name will be kept on a reserve list and if a place becomes available, either Joy or Jayne will contact you.

The Gloucester trial will be held at GL1 Gloucester Leisure Centre, Bruton Way, Gloucester GL1 1DT, from 7.20pm - 8.50pm. Please email Joy Clark (j.o.y.clark@btinternet.com) to tell her that you are going to turn up.

The Exeter trial will be at Pyramids Leisure Centre, Heavitree Road, Exeter (Note 7.00pm registration from 7.30pm - 9.00pm). Please email Jayne Turl (jayne.turl.rtc@hotmail.co.uk) to confirm if you will be attending, or just turn up in time to register on the night.

National Academy gives teaching and coaching a boost

Water polo courses were recently held at Millfield in conjunction with the National Academy. The Level 1 and level 2 courses ran consecutively, with approximately 150 candidates taking part. Martyn Thomas ran the level 1 course which consisted of many young players, all of whom passed the course.

Pippa Jones conducted the Level 2 course, with Malcom Sunner and Alan Donnellson assisting. Participants in the level 2 course were able to complete half the course units at the camp and will now continue to complete all the units.

Norman Leighton, Water Polo Talent Officer said, " It all went very well and was run successfully."

WP Development Clinic Dates

Please note that the ASA SW Region Water Polo Development Clinic which had been publicised for 29 June 2008 has been cancelled due to the number of clubs who train on a Sunday night which would make the session unviable. However, the good news is that the two remaining session (4 Oct and 1 Nov will now be back to three hours each - 4-7pm).

It is hoped to combine the 4 October session with an tournament for 93/94 and one for 95/96 but further information on this will follow once we have
confirmation that there are enough coaches to properly supervise teams. Please publicise these dates to as many people as possible as they are very valuable and value-for-money training sessions!
