Cereal swimmers

Kellogg's offer of free swims nationally is anticipated to cost Leisure East Devon around £15,000. The promotion, which began in April, has proved popular, with 5,318 vouchers being accepted at its three pools in Sidmouth, Exmouth and Honiton. But now LED has decided to call it a day and will finish accepting them from 19 September 2008.

David Paget, LED's chief executive, said there had been no restrictions on use of the vouchers, which gave one free swim, adult or junior, per voucher. He said Sidmouth had accepted 1,336 vouchers, with 1,045 at Honiton and the most, 2,937, at Exmouth.

ASA SWR 5Km and 3Km Pool Challenge 2008

Sunday 27 April 2008 - Bath University 50m pool (under ASA Laws and ASA Technical Rules)

A 5Km pool swim is now part of the national programme and this will be the fifth time that the South West Region / Western Counties have held such an event. This year again we are also giving competitors the opportunity to swim the shorter 3Km distance. The aim is to give pool swimmers the opportunity to swim these distances under race conditions and to encourage them to consider entering Open Water events when the warmer summer weather arrives.

To enter swimmers must be registered with the ASA and be members of a club affiliated to ASA SW region. The entry fee is £6.50.
5Km warm-up will be at 10.00am. Start 5Km at 10.30am.
3Km warm-up approx 1.30pm. Start 3Km approx 2.00pm.

Minimum age is 12 years old on 31 December 2008.

Please note that swimmers can enter EITHER the 5Km OR the 3Km, not both events. There will be a 60-minute time limit for the 3Km event and a 90-minute time limit for the 5Km event. If necessary there will be two heats of 5Km and 3 heats of 3Km. The events will be mixed. In the event that more than 16 entries are received for each event the organisers reserve the right to swim two to a lane. Competitors will be informed before the event if this is to happen.

ASA South West Region – Request for Officials 2008

ASA South West Region require your help in providing officials for their events, which include the Championships, Age Groups and Masters as well as other events for which we are asked to provide officials. These events will give those of you looking to gain wider experience the opportunity of not only officiating at a higher grade of swimming but also meeting other officials from the Region. Discussion and sharing of information is always useful!

Also this year the Youth Trust Games are being held in the region and we are being asked to arrange officials for this. At present we know the date but no specific times, but it would be helpful to know who is probably available. For this event all officials will need to have a valid CPR check and also attend an Equity Course – hopefully this will be organised for the officials to attend.

It is planned to hold an officials seminar later in the year for which we hope we will have a good attendance – remembering that all Licensed Officials need to attend a seminar in order to re- register when the time comes.

Please download, read, complete and return the SW Region gala competition form by 4 February 2008 - if you can help on the 19 January 2008 then please phone Lynne Elliott, 2 St Georges Road, Saltash, Cornwall. PL12 6EH (Tel: 01752 842119 or E-mail : lynne.elliott@btopenworld.com)
