When you go to a wedding, what do you wear? You dress up and you look smart. But if you did that every day it wouldn't feel special any more. The same applies to bodysuits. You don't train in a bodysuit, you train in a ragged old suit that's got a lot of resistance to it. You compete in some races in a slightly better suit and, for the really special occasions like the Olympics, you put on the real good one. You feel special and it has an effect.

As I have been asked by a few people at the club I would like to post the Speedo league website just in case anyone was looking for a site with all the results on.
    speedoleague.org.uk
Good Luck also to all the teams in the division finals and teams taking part in December

Seeming as I mentioned the site, I thought why not make a topic out of it. With the Final round of the 2003 Season coming up in December i thought it would be good to hear the views of some of the clubs and swimmers that take part. What could be improved? My first question is how many are there per division that are ment to go up and down each year or does it vary?

Hi, as chairman of the Speedo League Western Division, I feel I should reply to your question. The answer is two from each division should be promoted and demoted, with the winners and runners-up going through to the national final. However, a decision is taken each year in June at the annual general meeting on exactly how many are promoted due to dropouts, new members, etc. Hope this is clear.

Thank you that makes it a lot more clearer than it was. Just one more question if you would be as kind to answer is that the last round is split into three galas, a promotion gala, a mid-table gala and a relegation gala therefore would this mean that the teams in the mid-table gala would be ensured safty of relegation or does the result of the relegation gala also effect wether a team from the mid-table could relegated despite not being in the bottom gala?
    Thanks again

Hi, having looked at all the possibilities, I believe that if you are in the mid-table gala of the Speedo League, it would be almost impossible for you to be placed in a relegation position, except if there was a mass resignation of clubs from lower positions.

    Best Wishes

Thanks for your reply it helps to know that we will almost be sure of being in Division1 next year (which we are ) Couldnt help noticing that a team from Division 1 Western pulled out, would that team count as one of the relegation places at the end of the year?

I always like the Speedo Leauge and the way it is set out. The last few years have especially good being premoted two times in the last three years

Here's a sweeping generalisation - but pretty much true! The Clubs who are likely to be fighting it out for relegation is pretty much fixed after the first round.

    Why?

Well after the first round, teams are ranked in the league, (by order of league points then gala points where league points are equal). Then depending on the number of teams in the league, all but the bottom X number of Clubs are awarded a "bonus" 5 league points. (In a league of 24 teams the top 18 get 5 extra points).

In practical terms the 2 clubs to get relegated are almost certainly going to come from those bottom 6 teams come the end of Gala 3.

The Speedo League rules and the way that it works is a masterpiece of ingenuity in coming up with a method to rank 24 or so teams, from only 3 competitions, where the teams have no chance of ever competing against all the other teams! (Take the football premiership for example it takes them 38 games each to rank only 20 teams!) And can you honestly remember a time when the top team didn't win the league?

I wonder if this will provoke any response?

I agree with what you are saying. To only have three rounds of compotition seems senceless when you have 24 teams. Im thinking that the only problem with having more rounds is:

    1) When will there be time for the extra galas?
    2) Costs - Especially in a large leuage like the western leauge clubs have to travel a long way this in effect costs a lot of money. Can you expect a small club that is already struggling from rising ASA costs to prvoide money to compete in more than three rounds of swimming.

Unfortunatly in all every aspect it all comes down to money which is a shame. If a way was found around this yes the compotition could and would be a lot better

    Hey - don't misunderstand me!!

    I said:

I wasn't promoting the need for more rounds!! I was praising the fact that its incredible how accurately the final league positions generally reflects team abilities with only 3 rounds.

In most cases that I can remember its generally accepted that the "right" teams get promoted / relegated, and the generally accepted best 2 teams go on the represent the league in the National A / B finals.

In todays busy calendar there just wouldn't be the room, finance, (or enthusiasm from officials?), to have more than 3 rounds.

All the best from the Midland District (yes - a "spy").

    Sorry,

I simply misunderstood. One question though. If there was the enfusiasm of officials and clubs and all was available, would you go for extra rounds in the compotition? Or would extra rounds ruin the way in which the final table was produced?

I think it would need modifications to the "algorithm" for calculating league points to ensure the same "fairness".
Bigger problem would probably be fitting other rounds into the swimming calendar.
I'm not really in favour of more rounds (traditionalist!!), I was simply commenting on how well the "system" works with only 3 rounds.

    All the best, Gavin

Sorry to bother most people. A great round 1 performance all round but I have three questions concenrning the next round:

    1) When is the draw made?
    2) Will it be put up on this site?
3)If not where can i find it?

Having looked at the speedo league website it seems a few draws have already been made so im just wondering if the Western draw has been made,

    Thanks
