On the 7th April, the District Management Committee met and discussed the various issues and opportunities which resulted from the decisions made at ASA Council regarding regionalisation. One that required our immediate attention was the appointment of a 'Shadow' Regional Management Board (RMB). Each County was requested to appoint one member.

Regionalisation provides a fantastic opportunity to shape the future of our sport and have a direct impact upon delivery, but we are venturing into new territory – working with new people and in areas we haven’t touched upon before, e.g. health, crime prevention. We need to grasp the challenge but be prepared to stand up and be accountable for what we are doing.

The existing Western Counties Committees shall continue to operate as normal during the Shadow period.

In essence, the Shadow Board gives us the opportunity to begin to shape the new Region and formulate our Development Plans, as shown on the diagram overleaf.

The Shadow Board is now responsible for driving forward the Regional Plan. Nominees were put forward as people with vision and comfortable with change. The Shadow Board is responsible for the plan and accountable for its delivery. All appointed understand these implications. The Shadow Board is small enough to make decisions quickly and respond to change.

We are sure there people out in the clubs and your County with expertise that needs to be brought to the fore! The 'Shadow Board' will need to involve, during the next 15-18 months, additional experts from within the volunteer sector who have the skills / knowledge to assist the Board in making preparations for the changes necessary for the ASA South West Region to be a vibrant organisation which can make a difference.

    The region needs
  • People with vision
  • Who are comfortable with change
  • Decision makers
  • Leaders
  • People able to drive forward development
  • Communicators
  • Who understand the process and the implications of regionalisation
  • We are going to be working in areas we never have, do you have specialists in health, education, swimming development who may be able to contribute?

  • A news article on the May 22 meeting convened to appoint the Shadow Board is available here.

If you have any queries please contact John Bird, District Secretary or Alison Usher (ASA RDO) to discuss further.
