We could just throw you a lifebelt but we'd rather teach you to swim.

      Cheltenham SWPC PESSCL Project

Posted by: Admin  Friday, 13 January, 2006  03:33 PM
The aim of the project was to set up a sustainable school to club links project by providing Out of School Hours (OSL) swimming, mini water polo, synchronized swimming and diving sessions for year 4,5 and 6 pupils (ages 8 – 11) which would enhance and encourage increased participation in the sport and provide a direct link from the schools to Cheltenham SWPC.

The project started with mini water polo. 14 pilot schools were offered tasters sessions, of which 4 schools undertook, and then children were invited to more free taster sessions at a local swimming pool for a six week duration. Leaflets were given to the other schools and a mini water polo presentation took place at the Cheltenham Schools swimming gala as a promotional tool. Even though these taster sessions started very quietly 12 children are now attending regularly, of which 2 children have already approached the swimming club to join. The children are really enjoying the activity and each week a new child is starting.

The project will continue and expand from September to include taster sessions in the other disciplines of synchronized swimming and diving…. so check back for more information on the success of the programme!
