“We can’t make excuses (about lack of funding), we have to find a way. We have to create a situation where everyone takes responsibility for swimming fast.”

Free swimming intitiative in south west

Facilities Sport England South West, the Amateur Swimming Association South West and the Chief Leisure Officers’ Association in the South West are piloting a free swimming weekend across the region's 51 local authorities.

The South West Free Swimming Initiative will offer everyone living in the region the opportunity to swim in a public pool without charge over one weekend during October. The focus of the initiative will be 14-16 October 2005. Free Swimming has an important part to play in the programme of a swimming pool. It is an initiative that can be used both to alleviate inequalities and as a marketing tool. The challenge for many pools is to find new customers. A free swimming campaign can tempt new customers to the fold.

All pools need to be careful to avoid throwing open their doors to members of the public who want to take a quick dip but will never subsequently return to their pool. The approach needs to be much more long term, much more strategic.

It is all about how we can harness free swimming to achieve common objectives- more swimmers, more regular swimmers and swimming as an important part in the lives of the average person in the South West.

A pack is available which provides information to help organisers get started and keep ahead of the game. There are no great secrets to running a free swimming day but there are many handy hints that can make the execution of such a day much easier and more successful.

The information draws largely on the experiences of others and is presented as an easy to use reference guide. To download a copy, click here (pdf 1.39mb).

Getting involved! Registration for Free Swimming

All centres are required to register for the free swimming initiative, by returning the form at the back of the guide. This will ensure access to marketing material and inclusion within any regional promotion. Registration forms must be completed and returned by 20 September 2005.
