Facilities An Olympic training centre could be created at RAF Innsworth, say civic leaders. They want to tap into the millions of pounds made available by the Government ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.

Coun Brian Jones says the planned closure of the RAF base in 2008 would provide an ideal opportunity for Tewkesbury borough to have a new sports complex. Coun Jones (Con, Churchdown Brookfield) has held talks with council chief executive Teri Turner and other council officers.

Coun Jones says an Olympic- standard complex would enable Tewkesbury to keep the Cascades swimming pool: "Cascades could stay as a family pool with the facility at Innsworth being for the whole county.

"If the RAF closes in 2008, there would be time to build this facility for 2012."

He said there are facilities at RAF Innsworth that could be used to house and support Olympic athletes.

The council is looking at three possible sites for a new pool and leisure centre in Tewkesbury. They are Tewkesbury School in the borough council site in Gloucester Road and the former MAFF depot in Station Road.
